It’s been a long time….
Hey all,
It’s been way too long.
I haven’t written because college football has been way, way too frustrating at the moment.
The NIL disease that rampaged through the college basketball arena has hit college football even worse. I don’t know who’s going to play for whom after one year, because loyalty isn’t earned, it’s by checkbook.
I know where this is going. It won’t just be the guys fuming at the WR who they gave $50,000 to in a brown bag in the local Buc-ees, it’ll be thousands of people fuming at the WR who cost the group $3 million to go from Miami to Texas.
I know where this is going, because the transfer portal has already given us a glimpse. 3,400 entered into the transfer portal this year. Most of them to get a start, some of them because they just wanted more money from another school. Let’s look at 2023 for a second. 31,000 kids went to the school for different sports. 45% got the call and have found new dorms. That means that 55% absolutely screwed themselves.
I know where this is going, because there will be no salary cap, because there will be union that will call it ‘unfair practice’ and then someone will make an excuse about ‘mental health’, when there’s no mental health (in this bit about it) — you get paid to pay, and that’s your limit.
I know where this is going. Colleges are going to fall by the wayside when the college athletic funds are full to bursting. Shiny new stadiums (built on the taxpayers’ dime) will be bowed down to – despite only being played in 6-8 times a year plus a graduation ceremony or two and a country concert – and the honest-to-God student who can’t play sports but is a math genius is living in a dump compared to a brainless athlete who’s living in the comparable Hilton.
I know where this is going. College football players will eventually leave for the NFL after a year, get broken in two, and blame the colleges for letting them go. In the same as their buddy got booked for doing 101mph doing Main Street on his own and still blames someone else, they are blaming their own decision on someone else. Because that’s what athletes do, yo. And monied athletes will be the worst.
I know where this is going. You’re going to see more and more coaches resign, because the players are professional now and unlikely to take their crap like they did when they came in simply on a scholarship. In other words, the bully is getting bullied, and they don’t like it (see Saban, Nick).
But that’s just the portal.
I’m disenfrachised with the SEC, because it doesn’t want to play nine conference games and yet barks on about preferential treatment. Look at Missouri and Texas A&M – who came from the Big 12 some years ago. A&M has never played Georgia at Kyle Field..and it’s been FOURTEEN EFFING YEARS.
And while we’re at it, let’s talk about the SEC and B1G’s behavior, which has been horrible. They want even more expansion of both the college football play-off and March Madness because it’s what is good for them, their multimillion dollar coaches, and not good for the game itself. Forget the possibility of players’ injuries, this is about the money, baby.
It’s hard work at the moment.
And add this to the fact that I’ve got a four year-old and one-year-old and a wife who makes me feel guilty when I just want to take a break and write for you guys, and it’s been hard work.
I’m sorry. I’ll do better.
