THANK THE LORD BABY JESUS! THE SEC’S GOING TO NINE GAMES!
After years of everyone slaughtering the SEC for playing an eight-game schedule, the league finally caved in and said that from 2026, they would be playing nine.
All the spinning in the world doesn’t escape the fact that Greg Sankey & Co did not do this out of the bottom of their hearts. They did this because they want to get as many teams into the play-offs as possible, and this puts the league in a more advantageous position to do so. Anything else would be a lie.
Read this utter tripe from the Commish, who made the decision after being nagged by the ADs, who were probably fed to the teeth with the crap they were getting from the colleagues in other conferences: “Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities’ commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation….This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.”
That’s great news for the schools, who get one extra SEC home game every other year to bank.
But it’s bad news for the smaller schools who’s payments for an easy game will now disappear. Oh, and say goodbye to a lot of those out-of-conference home-and-homes, which will now be abolished on the back that Alabama have a massive game coming up against Mississippi State which is much bigger than one against Ohio State, despite everyone’s thoughts to the contrary.
Anyway, the biggest winners are ESPN, because they get even more games on the schedule – especially with the new app that’s coming out this week.
Now maybe Georgia will be able to play on the road at Texas A&M.
