Georgia’s top wide receiver and future Biletnikoff finalist George Pickens will have an operation on his knee after getting injured in practice, the university has said.

“George Pickens injured his right knee in spring football practice on a non-contact play on Tuesday afternoon. MRI confirmed an injury to his ACL which will require surgery. He has already started his pre-op rehabilitation program….a full recover in anticipated.”

Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart added: “The good news is is that the MRI showed it to be an isolated injury with no other structures involved. George is hard worker. I know he will bring the same work ethic to rehab as he showed in practice every day.”

Pickens had 513 yards receiving and 6 TDs in 8 games for the Dawgs last year. He was the second-highest receiver in yards (by 1 yard) versus Kearis Jackson, but doubled Jackson’s touchdown total.

He and Jackson’s total was 100 yards higher than Georgia’s next WR, Jermaine Burton.

Pickens himself posted a black Instagram screen with the word: “Bye” on it, signally that he’s probably never going to play in the red and black again.

Taking Pickens will be a massive blow for the Bulldogs, who were going to be featuring Pickens in an all-star – and experienced – receiving unit with QB JT Daniels under center.

With Pickens gone – presumably for good (you can expect him to decide to the NFL pretty damned quickly following this news) – Georgia will lean more on Jackson, Burton and super senior Demetris Robertson. You could also see some reps for true freshmen Adonai Mitchell and Jackson Meeks, as well as Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, who was the top WR in Georgia’s 2020 class, but got injured against Florida last year (in a game where he caught a TD!).

This is going to lead to some interesting times at Sanford, but sadly not good.
