So who’s gonna be next for Texas A&M?

Now Jimbo’s been pushed out of the door at Texas A&M, immediately tongues are wagging about who’s next up.

Here are our runners and riders, with Duke’s Mike Elko seemingly the run away fan favorite.

THE FAVORITE

Mike Elko: Has turned around Duke from a national joke to a ACC competitor, which has included a win over Clemson this year. Currently 15-8 in Raleigh. Was a great defensive coordinator in College Station. Defenses average 25th in the country between 2018-2021. More importantly, wasn’t fired by Fisher.

WHO SHOULD GET A CALL

Brian Hartline: Ohio State is a bigger job than Texas A&M, and all he’s done in his time at Ohio State is recruit talent. Puts endless amount of wide receivers in the first 2 or 3 rounds of the NFL. CJ Stroud, one of his current quarterbacks, is currently playing out of his mind for Houston. Oh, and his running backs are pretty damn good, too. He’s also got NFL experience. But A&M won’t go for him because he ‘doesn’t have the head coaching experience’.

Tom Herman: Herman wasn’t fired because he was a bad head coach at Texas. Herman was fired because he pissed a lot of the boosters off in Austin by refusing to play ball. If Texas A&M’s boosters let Herman be Herman, he could be a slam-dunk hire…particularly as he knows the fertile recruiting grounds of the Lone Star State. He went 32-18 at Texas, so he’s no slouch.

WHO WILL GET A CALL

Lane Kiffin: It’s no secret that Kiffin wants out of Ole Miss. Texas A&M would be a fascinating challenge for him. Kiffin’s record, however, is 1-10 against Top 5 teams in his career. That’s terrible. But an A&M roster will be far more talented for him, and he’s good at collecting talented quarterbacks. And Evan Stewart’s going to stick around for one more year.

Dan Lanning: The Texas A&M job’s a massive one, but the way Lanning’s teams in Oregon have played, it’s an exciting time. Should they beat Washington, they’ll probably in a playoff spot. There are thoughts that he’ll be the hire when Nick Saban finally retires at Alabama, but the money could be worth the shot.

Lance Leipold: People might not think he’s ‘big’ enough for the Texas A&M job, but look what he’s done with a Kansas team was a national joke until 2021, and now they have had some huge victories under their belt (most recently against Oklahoma), and his offenses – again – are fun to watch.

LAUGH (BUT MAYBE)

Bobby Petrino: Laugh if you must, but the recruiting class wasn’t his when he came to town as offensive coordinator last year. He’s capable of recruiting high-octane offenses, which should make Texas A&M fans excited after years of (generally) incredibly dull football. Also already has a relationship with recruits, and will be cheaper than Fisher by some distance (Aggie boosters can’t keep on shelling out $100m contracts).

Gus Malzahn: 18-9 record at UCF, which already makes him the third-winningest coach (percentage-wise) in school history (it’s early, but still!). His quarterbacks tend to be bombers and his offenses play at high-speed. He’s also good at getting talent together.
