SEC Preview: Alabama, Jimbo back at it again, and LSU’s soul

It’s an interesting week in the SEC. There’s the Jimbo Fisher v Nick Saban media-fuelled battle. There’s LSU – fresh from getting buckets of crap thrown at it about their defense, visiting a Missouri side that people are believing in. There’s a Georgia team under the microscope about their eliteness hosting Kentucky, who’s gotten some rave reviews. The Lane Train continues against Arkansas. Florida hosts, er, Vanderbilt. And let’s not talk about the Mississippi State v Eastern Michigan game. Anyway, so here we go:   No.11 Alabama (-1) at Texas A&M: This is a HUGE game for both parties. Because both sides have a loss, another one would pretty much kill their playoff chances, unless they won the SEC West and

SEC Preview: Can Lane Kiffin get that big win (at last)?

Lane Kiffin runs his mouth a lot. But he has failed to follow up on it on so many occasions, it’s getting a joke. Here’s a stat: He’s 1-19 against teams who finish up winning 9 games, and 3-7 against teams who end up getting into the Top 25. And last year, Ole Miss was destroyed by LSU in a Jaylen Daniels special. Kiffin will want to show everyone that he’s back (and ready for a bigger job!), and with the Tigers coming to town, this game’s got top billing. 1. No. 13 LSU (-2.5) at No.20 Ole Miss: Even though LSU gave up 426 yards to a pretty bad Arkansas offense, they got things right with an exceptional end-of-game

SEC Power Rankings: Boy, was I wrong about Missouri

OK Missouri! I was wrong about you! I was wrong about Eli Drinkwitz! I was wrong about Brady Cook! I was wrong about Harrison Mevis! I was wrong about Missouri’s game against Kansas State on Saturday, in which I predicted a home shellacking! I was wrong about Missouri and Vanderbilt being the worst teams in not only the SEC East, but also the SEC! OK, maybe not the wanker and the weird-about-the-daughters bit, but I was wrong about you, Eli! Please forgive me! Harrison Mevis’ ‘Bomb heard around the SEC’ the longest kick in SEC history. Brady Cook got the boos at the start but got the cheers at the start. And the atmosphere was off the chain. And it

Week 2 Rankings: Ole Miss rules, Georgia needs to play someone

Normally, if a team’s the No.1 team in the nation, then they would usually be No.1 on our SEC rankings. But aside from the fact that Georgia’s schedule is medicore-to-dreadful, they haven’t looked wonderful on offense, and aren’t clicking in enough gears to get the No.1 spot. So here are the rankings: Ole Miss (2-0): Beat Tulane 37-20 and looked increasingly comfortable as the game went on. Judkins is a weapon, and Jaxson Dart is looking increasingly comfortable within the offense. Look, there are still things to iron out (they were 1-13 on 3rd downs), but a ‘scrappy’ offense that wins is better than none at all. Tennessee (2-0): Tennessee’s offense sputtered against Austin Peay, but they still ran out in

Week 2 Betting Preview: Get excited about Texas-Alabama, A&M v Miami, and Ole Miss v Tulane

It’s Week 2 of the season tomorrow. The two words on everyone in college football’s mouth is: “Texas” and “Alabama”. Texas fans are apparently forking out $1,000 just to be there – even though Alabama’s widely expected to be comfortable. But that’s not the cool games in the SEC. Ole Miss goes to Tulane in a battle of ‘First to 100’. Texas A&M goes to Miami in the battle of ‘Guess Which School’s Back After Winning This One’. Auburn go up the West Coast to Cal. Mississippi State hosts the high-octane offense of Arizona. And there’s FBS intrigue in the battle of the rich private schools as Vanderbilt goes across state lines to face Wake Forest. However, there are duds. We’re trying

THE WEEK ONE SEC RANKING LIST

Without further ado (and without focus on the SEC’s 1-3 record against Power-5 teams this week) here we goooo……. Vanderbilt (2-0): BECAUSE THEY ARE 2-0 BABY! AND THE RECORD MATTERS!!  Tennessee (1-0): BECAUSE THEY WERE THE ONLY SEC TEAM TO BEAT A POWER-5 TEAM EVEN THOUGH A LOT OF NON POWER-5 TEAMS AND MAYBE A COUPLE OF FCS TEAMS WOULD HAVE BEATEN THAT POWER-5 TEAM!! Oh, and Joe Milton’s 21-30, 201 yard, 2 TD effort (where he shone out at times), was excellent.  Kentucky (1-0): Beat a team that’s expected to be a title contender in the MAC. Look, it was hardly a perfect performance on the offense, especially in the first half from Golden Boy Devin Leary. But

SEC Preview: This year doesn’t matter for Mississippi State

This year doesn’t matter if you’re a Mississippi State. At least, it shouldn’t. If the Bulldogs got 4-8 this season and have an 0-for in the SEC, no-one should be worried. After all, Mike Leach is in pirate heaven, and we’re still trying to get over that. WHO’S GONE With the passing away of Leach, the transfers were expected, and it happened. 25 people left Starkville. Some of them – like Mississippi State’s best WR RaRa Thomas – left for Georgia (he was arrested for misdemeanor family battery charge and a felony false imprisonment charge on Monday, January 23, but managed to avoid the courts by striking a deal to have anger management classes). WHO’S IN The Bulldogs brought in former

SEC Preview: Can anyone stop Georgia?

Georgia’s offseason has been stunningly bad, replete with a deadly accident on the morning after the National Championship player which killed a Georgia player, 13 speeding tickets, an article accusing the school of not paying attention to sexual assault claims after complaints (the AJC Journalist who wrote the article was fired, despite the fact that the AJC’s investigation found no reason to call the actual article a fabrication), and the very public continued signing of a Jamaal Jarrette, who had been accused of sexual assault while on a recruiting trip. Oh, and hilariously, Kirby Smart had to boot one of his transfers – Smoke Bouie (who came in from Texas A&M) – for – lying to a policeman and driving

Lane Kiffin: Winner or Whiner? (Ole Miss Preview)

Lane Kiffin is on a mission to make a statesman of himself. After failing to get the Auburn job, Kiffin has decided that he’s going to be the Nick Saban, proclaiming the evils of NIL. He reckons that it’s a crazy free market, with schools that have the most aggressive donors (I think he was taking a shot at the rest of the SEC, but who knows?) being able to sign any recruit they want, limiting the actions of recruiting and essentially played Money-ed ball (you heard that line hear first). Speaking of free market, it’s not secret that Lane Kiffin was lifting his blouse to Auburn for ages, and it didn’t work out. For some reason (and we suspect

The questions that you’d really like to ask each SEC coach

Every week, SEC head coaches come to the podium. And every week, they are thrown softballs by the members of the press. They are asked about quarterbacking situations, how they feel about practice, and in roundabout terms, what the situation is with certain players, who get themselves in trouble. But there’s a question (or two) that we’d like a SEC coach to answer this offseason. And won’t. ALABAMA: “Mr Saban, how did it feel when David Pollack said on air that Alabama’s crown has now been taken over Georgia on College Gameday when he was sat next to you? Were you more pissed off at Pollack or the College Gameday people, and why didn’t they give you the chance to
