SEC Championship Preview (and others): Georgia v Alabama, folks

Before the season, if you said that Georgia and Alabama would be playing this weekend at the SEC Championship Game, you wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. But after the Alabama generally dreadful performances at the start of the season, including one where Crimson Tide had struggled – and I mean struggled – against South Florida, the prevailing thought that they wouldn’t make it was 60-40. Alabama was definitely helped by three factors: LSU couldn’t find a defense, and Auburn couldn’t work out a defense on 4th and 31. It’s award season, so we want to throw around some awards ourselves, before those Heisman people get in our way and make us look bad. So here we go. Like any good divorces, it finished because of money. CBS had the media deal of a lifetime, only spending $825 million to the SEC on a 15-year contract, giving the schools $55 million per year each and itself the primary rights to each weekend. They refused to move on the ‘Best Contract On Earth’, and when ESPN threw in a $3 billion, 10-year offer for the conference, the SEC jumped at it. Texas A&M hires Mike Elko: How will he fare?

Mike Elko has been announced as the head coach of Texas A&M. The former Duke head coach (where he guided the Blue Devils to back-to-back bowl appearances, something rarely seen in Raleigh) returns to College Station, where he was defensive co-ordinator under Jimbo Fisher before his departure. So it’s Thanksgiving. It’s Thanksgiving, so here’s one thing that each SEC team should – and should not – be thankful for (or maybe more) this year… ALABAMA Thankful: That Tommy Rees has finally worked out how to use Jalen Milroe. Suddenly they look like a machine again. Week 11: Ain’t a lot on your SEC register

I hate this weekend in the SEC. It’s basically a tune-up weekend that should have happened at the start of the season, but somehow it happens before ‘Rivalry Week’ at the end of the year. The Chatanooga – Alabama, Louisiana Monroe – Ole Miss, New Mexico State – Auburn games aren’t interesting at all. Saturday’s coverage of Abilene Christian’s trip to Texas A&M and Southern Miss at Mississippi State will basically be a load of commentators gossiping about the well-paid departures of Mssrs Fisher and Arnett. Mississippi State fires Zach Arnett

Mississippi State has fired head coach Zarch Arnett after just 11 games. He finished with a 5-6 record but an awful 1-6 in the SEC this year, where the only highlight was a 7-3 victory over Arkansas (who might lose their head coach soon too!). Arnett was paid $3 million. He’ll still be owed $4.5 million – chump change compared to the amount owed to Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M – half of what is left on its deal, according to MSU’s 247 page. Now Jimbo’s been pushed out of the door at Texas A&M, immediately tongues are wagging about who’s next up. Here are our runners and riders, with Duke’s Mike Elko seemingly the run away fan favorite. THE FAVORITE Mike Elko: Has turned around Duke from a national joke to a ACC competitor, which has included a win over Clemson this year. Currently 15-8 in Raleigh. Jimbo Fisher out at Texas A&M

Jimbo Fisher has been fired at Texas A&M. He will be taking $76m with him, with a $20m due within the first month of termination, and then he gets a $7m annuity over next 7 years. He might be touchable during that time. The writing was on the wall “They won’t fire him, the buyout’s too big”, boosters told me over and over again last year after another moribund offensive performance – particularly against a they-turned-out-to-be-awful Appalachian State team.
