Where might Bo Nix go?

So that was a weird Sunday. Longtime Auburn QB Bo Nix has said that he will enter into the transfer portal this year after a weird and wonderful career on The Plains.

Whether it was that he preferred Gus Malzahn’s style of coaching to Brian Harsin’s, or he thought that he simply couldn’t ‘do it’ at SEC level anymore is up for dispute.

What is not up for dispute is his career, when he threw for 7,251 yards and 36 TDs and 19 INTs. In his weird style, he ran for 859 more with 18 TDs, and he was one of the most watchable things about Auburn football in years, due to his crazy unpredictability.

Only one time in major statistics did he make the SEC’s top 3, and that was pass attempts in 2020. For the rest of the statistics, he was rather medicore in a world of offense where he was really meant to thrive. Was that the fault of Malzahn or his offensive coordinator of last season, Mike Bobo? Dunno. But one thing’s for certain: He will be missed.

He beat Alabama in 2019 in one of the most electrifying games you’ll ever see, threw a touchdown against LSU last season en route to going 2-1 against the Tigers.

So where’s he going to end up?

Here are some possibilities.

  • UCF: The logical choice. Gus Malzahn is the head coach down in Orlando, and the Golden Knights need a QB after Dillon Gabriel packed his bags, potentially for Chip Kelly and UCLA, although Lane Kiffin’s been long-rumored to want him.
  • Ole Miss: Lane Kiffin loves his mobile quarterbacks, and could tighten Nix up in terms of his mechanics, helping him to be NFL-ready. Matt Corral’s gone, so he will need experience.
  • LSU: Starting QB Max Johnson and Myles Brennan have now gone, leaving a massive hole for the Tigers to fill. Nix is more escapable, and has won in the SEC before.
  • Cincinatti: Luke Fickel loves his mobile quarterbacks. Desmond Ritter’s gone after this season, and the Bearcats and the AAC are the country’s 6th-best conference. He’ll still have some strong targets, and a great offensive weapon that hasn’t fallen apart at the seams during coaching carousel season.
  • Clemson: ‘DJ U’ ain’t good enough, and Nix should thrive in an offense-heavy ACC.

And one dark horse…..

  • Nebraska: Hear us out. The Cornhuskers like mobile quarterbacks, and their utterly dogshit incumbent Adrian Martinez – who was at fault for at least half of their losses last season has transferred. Thank God. The Huskers have installed Mark Whipple, who was responsible for navigating Kenny Pickett to a trip in New York. Scott Frost, who is an offensive genius if he gets the right QB, would give him a place to shine.
