Quick bowl reaction: Bama in, FSU/ Georgia out

After they beat Georgia in the National Championship Game and Florida State’s offense looked so ragged against Louisville, it seemed inevitable that Alabama was going to be the final team into the College Football Play-Off. They will play No.1 Michigan, while No.2 Washington and No.3 Texas face off in the other one. Georgia fans could moan about not being one of the best teams in, but they sank themselves by back-to-back not-great performances against Georgia Tech and Alabama respectively. In the end, they ended up No.6 in the nation, and will face Florida State in the Orange Bowl – something we suspect won’t have a lot of weight if you consider the amount of players who won’t play. SEC Championship Preview (and others): Georgia v Alabama, folks

Before the season, if you said that Georgia and Alabama would be playing this weekend at the SEC Championship Game, you wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. But after the Alabama generally dreadful performances at the start of the season, including one where Crimson Tide had struggled – and I mean struggled – against South Florida, the prevailing thought that they wouldn’t make it was 60-40. Alabama was definitely helped by three factors: LSU couldn’t find a defense, and Auburn couldn’t work out a defense on 4th and 31. Georgia leads AP Top 25 preseason poll

  In unsurprising news, the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 is led by Georgia, ahead of Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU. USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington round out the Top 10. In all, there are 6 SEC, 5 Pac-12, 5 B1G, 4 Big 12, 3 ACC as well as Notre Dame, and, er, Tulane. In a bigger statement, Yahoo Sports pointed out that all of the Top 7 will be in the SEC or B1G next year. Surprisingly, Texas is the top team in the Big 12 at 11. We thought they’d be higher. Georgia is Thanos, Get out of the way

When Kirby Smart started rolling out the classes that he did, Georgia fans went from the ‘expecting-but-really-hoping’ type to ‘expecting’ type. This season, with Alabama disappointing as much as they did, Georgia has become inevitable. Inevitable teams in college football don’t sideswipe others out of the way. Remember Thanos had his struggles with The Avengers before eventually taking things over. Georgia’s struggles weren’t with the best of ’em. Florida suspends 7, but will it make a huge difference?

The Florida Gators suspended seven players for the season-opening clash with Michigan at JerryWorld – including troubled wide receiver Anotnio Callaway. They were charged for buying stuff at the school bookstore on their school IDs using money they didn’t have, then reselling them for cash. And while they weren’t arrested and charged for fraud, coach Jim McElwain wasn’t happy. “We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing” he said in a statement. “Action has been taken — they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game.
