All Hail The Kings of the SEC!

“Long Live The King!” “Long Live The King!” “Long Live The King!” The damned British can’t stop yelling that today. Frankly, I’ve got too much of a hangover from the non-Mexican Mexican holiday of Cinco De Mayo, which gave me far too much excuse to get wasted on margaritas and eat at taco from which I am, ahem, not feeling great this morning. In my daze, I wrote down who were the 14 Kings of the SEC. We’re taking out the crazy boosters, because Texas isn’t here yet. Anyway, here we are: ALABAMA Bear Bryant: Bear Bryant’s “The Bear”. Nick Saban can bring 20 National Championships to Tuscaloosa in the next 20 years, but he ain’t The Bear, and he

Missouri announces Odom as head coach

Missouri has promoted defensive co-ordinator Barry Odom as the Tigers’ new head coach. Odom, who has continuously helped to put together one of the best defenses in college football year in, year out was seen by many as a fantastic deal – particularly with the speculation that Odom may have jumped ship and gone to Memphis, who saw head coach Justin Fuente take the same position at Virginia Tech. Former head coach Gary Pinkel left his post at the end of a 5-7 season after announcing he had contracted lymphoma. The official announcement came just now.

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel resigning at season end

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel will step down at the end of the season after being diagnosed with lymphoma. He will resign on December 31, 2015 or when a new coach is in place, the school announced. Pinkel, who took over the Tigers in 2002, guided Missouri to two straight SEC Championship Games in 2013 and 2014, and has seen 26 Mizzou players drafted, including Sheldon Richardson, Jeremy Maclin, Shane Ray, Blaine Gabbert, Markus Golden and Aldon Smith. He’s the winningest coach in Missouri history with nearly 120 wins. This season has been a tough one on the field for his Missouri side, which has been hampered by the suspension of starting quarterback Maty Mauk and some awful offense.

We stand and applaud you, Missouri players

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to stand up and applaud anything that Missouri football players have done ON the pitch. They’ve been awful. They’ve been awful with quarterback Maty Mauk, and they’ve been awful with takeover quarterback Drew Lock. Their offensive line has more holes than Penn State’s – and that’s saying something – and if they actually played Kansas in a Grain War in 2015, the game wouldn’t end until 2016, such is the paucity of both offenses. But off the field, I want to throw these guys a party. Not because they stood up for their own players’ rights. I don’t believe college football players are slaves. They choose to play college football, and they get

Missouri 2015 Preview: QB Controversy Brewing?

We hadn’t heard of Drew Lock before we listened to the excellent Missouri-dedicated podcast ‘Mizzodcast’, but everything’s going to be pretty interesting under center if he continues his off-season challenge to QB Maty Mauk. Last season Missouri – in another stunning season – won the SEC East and was then brutalized in the SEC Championship Game by Alabama. OFF-SEASON The biggest story was very nearly a tragic one. Defensive lineman Harold Brantley was caught in a car crash that seriously injured him. Thank God he’s still alive. He’s done for the season, but not for life. Aside from that, the team lost defensive co-ordinator Dave Steckel, who went to coach Missouri State. Pinkel hired Memphis DC Barry Odom to fill

Pinkel: Missouri fans still want Border War

Gary Pinkel has said that fans still want the annual game against Kansas, which was stopped after the Tigers moved to the SEC. The so-called ‘Border War’ might not be the fiercest in the country to college football neutrals, but to both fanbases, the game at Arrowhead highlighted the season. And the rivalry’s very close – Missouri leads the rivalry 57-54-9 (or 56-55-9, depending on who you talk to!). The Tigers have won five out of the last six. “I don’t think there’s any question the fans want it back. It’s one of the longest rivalries in college football,” he said. “As you well know, when we moved it into Kansas City, Arrowhead Stadium, we’ve had some phenomenal games down

SEC Media Days: What We’re Expecting (SEC East)

On Tuesday we told you what we’re expecting from SEC West coaches on the schedule. It should be a lot of talk about the schedule, quarterbacking and good running backs. Of course, we’d love them to talk about LSU and Alabama’s penchant for getting people arrested, shitty defensive co-ordinators, and their hot wives/daughters/do-nothing husbands-in-law, but it’s probably not going to happen. Anyway, this time it’s time for your SEC East coaches. FLORIDA What Jim McElwain will probably get asked: How he’s settling into the job (“I love it down here. It’s a change from the Rockies”), how he plans to change the offense (“Don’t expect miracles, but we should be better than last year”); How tough the SEC’s schedule is (“We’re

Alabama’s Nick Saban top-paid coach in college football

Unsurprisingly, Alabama head coach Nick Saban is the top-ranked coach in college football, USA Today has reported. Despite a season where he didn’t win his bowl game and lost to Auburn, Saban – who’s Crimson Tide team is now the top-ranked team in the nation – still earned $7.1m in total pay in 2013 – including a base salary of $6.9m. Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin was the second-most paid in the SEC and the fourth-best coach in college football, pulling in $5m in base salary, and $5.006m total. LSU’s Les Miles earned $4.3m ($4.369m total), and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier earned $4m ($4.016m total).   Here is the total pay for all SEC coaches: 1. Nick Saban (Alabama) – $6.9m

Missouri, West Virginia confirm home-and-home series

Missouri and West Virginia have said that they will play a home-and-home series in 2016 and 2019. Mizzou will travel to Morgantown in 2016, and the Mountaineers will come to Columbia in 2019. This ties into the SEC’s requirements for the conference’s schools to play a team from the Big Ten, the Big XII, ACC, or Pac-12 every season from 2016, in an effort to boost its own credentials with the College Football Play-Off Committee.

2014 SEC PREVIEW: Can Missouri shock the SEC East AGAIN?

As we’re in the swing of doing our SEC previews, we thought that as the SEC Conference 2013 winners were first up on The SEC Football Blog SEC Preview, then the 2013 SEC Conference runners-up (aka ‘Winners of the SEC East) should be second on the list. Then we can go with 2013’s also-rans.  So we start with Missouri. I can’t wait to see Maty Mauk. I was really, really excited to see Maty Mauk link up with Dorial Green-Beckham, until Gary Pinkel booted him out of Columbia. But I’m still excited to see Maty Mauk. Oh, and there was some stuff about a guy called Michael Sam, too.  LAST SEASON Missouri shocked the WORLD in 2013 when they won
