Drafting from the SEC: Stock tips

OK, so I’m your broker and the stock market is crashing. You look elsewhere, because you’re a gambling addict and you can’t sit on the loose change. ‘Let’s look at SEC Futures’, I tell you. Immediately, you’re thinking I’m talking about the Securities & Exchange Commission, and trying to work out whether the conversation that Larry and you had about bonds in the bar last night could have been eavesdropped by some genius in New York City. ‘No, no. It’s about the NFL,” I reassure you. “You know? The place where the owners couldn’t really give a crap about the fans. Yeah, they provide the atmosphere and add millions to their pockets in stupid merchandising, but it’s all about the

More trouble at Tennessee? Key RB suspended after pot arrest

If it wasn’t the persistent losing, or the middle fingers put up against Alabama fans, or even the hot seat that’s frying Butch Jones right now, then the under-fire coach has had to do something else: Suspend his top running back. John Kelly, who’s had 615 yards on 125 carries and 6 TDs, as well as 26 receptions for 255 yards (averaging 9.8 yards per reception), is a key playmaker, was cited on marijuana possession on Wednesday. “Kelly consented to the search, and officers asked Ignont to get out of the car, the statement said. During the search, they found “a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana” as well as “a glass pipe usually used

Florida suspends 7, but will it make a huge difference?

The Florida Gators suspended seven players for the season-opening clash with Michigan at JerryWorld – including troubled wide receiver Anotnio Callaway. They were charged for buying stuff at the school bookstore on their school IDs using money they didn’t have, then reselling them for cash. And while they weren’t arrested and charged for fraud, coach Jim McElwain wasn’t happy. “We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing” he said in a statement. “Action has been taken — they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward.” Callaway was suspended alongside OL Kadeem

Nick Saban’s not going to suspend Da’Shawn Hand

Alabama DE Da’Shawn Hand won’t be suspended by Nick Saban after his DUI arrest last weekend. The fact that the junior was found asleep in the driver’s seat of his car by Tuscaloosa police – something that is counted as a DUI in the State of Alabama – but he was not driving may have saved his bacon on the suspension front. “Da’Shawn put himself in a bad situation, obviously made a mistake being where he was at the time,” Saban said. “But the fact that he didn’t drive the car, which is what we tell the players not to do — and it’s not OK that he was drinking, with me, and that’s a behavioral issue that needs to be

Ole Miss star Tunsil to return against Texas A&M

Ole Miss star offensive linesman Laremy Tunsil will return against Texas A&M, giving the Rebels a monster boost going into the final games of their SEC West run. Tunsil was given a seven game suspension by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits, which meant the Memphis game will be his last game. Ole Miss said: “During the course of the process, it was determined by the NCAA that Tunsil received impermissible extra benefits that included the use of three separate loaner vehicles over a sixth-month period without payment, a four-month interest-free promissory note on a $3,000 down payment for purchasing a used vehicle, two nights of lodging at a local home, an airline ticket purchased by a friend of a

Florida suspends QB Grier for 1 year

The Florida Gators have suspended QB Will Grier for the rest of the season after the player failed a drugs test, head coach Jim McElwain announced. Grier’s test – according to McElwain – was for taking an 0ver-the-counter supplement, and will find him out until the seventh game of the 2016 season. Grier said in a press conference: “I took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it…I did not check with the medical staff before taking it. I hope that people can learn from this, learn from my mistake. I’m really sorry to everyone, just really sorry.” McElwain added: “It’s something he feels horrible about….It’s an honest mistake, and yet can be prevented by checking with our medical staff. This

Gurley suspended additional two games; Georgia to appeal

Star Georgia running back Todd Gurley has been suspended an extra two games by the NCAA – meaning that he’ll be back for the Auburn game at Sanford Stadium on November 15th. Georgia already suspended Gurley for two games – the road wins against Arkansas and Missouri – after finding out he had taken money for signing autographs. It was thought to be around the $400 mark, but the further investigation found that it was far more than that. The NCAA said that Gurley was suspended for “accepting more than $3,000 in cash from multiple individuals for autographed memorabilia and other items over two years.” It added that “Gurley, who acknowledged violating NCAA rules, must repay a portion of the

When will Georgia get Todd Gurley back?

Every Georgia fan on Twitter seemed to erupt in celebration with the news that Georgia had applied (well, at least they had at the time of writing since it was 4 hours ago) to the NCAA to get Todd Gurley out of playing purgatory and restated to the team. According to a release from Georgia, the University said that it “plans to file the necessary paperwork with the NCAA later today.” Seth Emerson, a writer from the Macon Telegraph and Columbus Ledger-Enquirer wrote that the “The NCAA and UGA have been working together on Gurley’s situation, so UGA’s request seems almost assured of being approved.” There seems to be no question that Gurley took cash. Gurley’s own statement – although

Gurley suspension puts Georgia in spotlight: Week 7 SEC Predictions

On a weekend that the No.2 team in the nation go and play the No. 3 team, and the team which beat Alabama goes down to a cauldron of noise to play in butt-hurt Texas, it’s funny how one incident can steal a spotlight for another team completely. And that incident and spotlight was stolen by Georgia, which has suspended their Heisman Trophy candidate/frontrunner indefinitely because he was photographed signing autographs (apparently he accepted $400 to do it in the spring). It’s strange, because there’s also spotlight on Florida, which suspended QB Treon Harris while it investigates an accusation of sexual assault against him. I mean, it’s weird out West at the moment, but it might be even weirder out

Todd Gurley suspended by UGA

The only word we had to say for this news when we saw it was: “Wow”. Today Georgia suspended its best player and Heisman hopeful running back Todd Gurley indefinitely for an “alleged violation of NCAA rules”. According to Andy Staples at Sports Illustrated – who cites Georgia’s compliance department,  “Gurley was paid $400 to sign 80 items in Athens last spring“, and there is photo evidence of Gurley doing the deed. “I’m obviously very disappointed,” said UGA head football coach Mark Richt. “The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri.” Allegedly Gurley was paid for signing signatures, according to a post from Reddit and Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman. Fox Sports’ update says:
