SEC Preview: Ole Miss is all gas

If you love old school Big 12 or Pac-12 football, where they put up a kiddy amount of points and no-one plays any defense, then Ole Miss was your favorite team last year. Averaging 39.2 points per game and 555 yards per game, the Rebels worried every defense in the country. And boy (if you love your offense) was it fun. But Ole Miss was lousy at defense. They were worst in the SEC in giving up points, rushing yards allowed, second-last in passing yards allowed, and total yards. Nationally, the best they had defensive (points allowed), ranked…..117th. So boy (if you love your defense) it was miserable. So in an effort to not make any depressed, we’re not going

Here’s who won the SEC QB Battles

Every SEC starting QB apart from Mississippi State has been named. Here’s an outline of what SEC head coaches have done. THE CERTAINTIES ALABAMA: BRYCE YOUNG. Young was named starter on 8/30. After coming to Tuscaloosa as one of the top QBs in the 2020 recruiting cycle, everyone has been excited about seeing this Californian prospect start. He has already been mentioned as having a Heisman chance. ARKANSAS: KJ JEFFERSON. Although there’s meant to be a quarterback battle in Fayetteville, Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman has been fawning over Jefferson’s play so much, that everyone else is obviously stepping back from the sophomore, now that Felipe Franks has gone to the NFL. AUBURN: BO NIX This is the year. Bo

The SEC: Your rooting guide

Hello, Mr New SEC fan. You’re looking for a team to root for, and here at the SEC Football Blog we’d like to be your ‘rooting guide’. For the record, all of our fanbases get loaded and cook good food before a game on a Saturday. Some fans are obnoxious, some are respectful. They want their team to beat the living crap out of yours, but they probably won’t tell that you to your face. It’s a Southern thing. Our stadiums are monstrous theaters, and a lot of our players go play in the NFL. Know this: The school you root for has historically been in trouble with the NCAA – college football’s governing body – at some point, and

A note to the incoming Alabama football athlete

You wouldn’t know that a below-average sized, thinning-haired, 69-year old male who last played the game when your grandparents were alive, would be able to coax you – the giant among giant on the high school football stage – enough to go and play in a State that to most people would be one they wouldn’t want to visit, let alone live.   And yet year after year, the Pied Piper of Tuscaloosa brings the Gods of American High School into campus and gets them to sign on the dotted line. So here’s a letter to that class. You could replay this letter for many of the major programs, by the way. ***** If you come to Tuscaloosa, you’ll

Tennessee hires Josh Heupel as new head coach. What’s next?

Tennessee has hired former UCF head coach Josh Heupel as its new head coach. Danny White – who is now Tennessee’s AD – was formerly Heupel’s boss at UCF. He’ll be paid $4 million-a-year on a 6-year deal. He said on his press conference: “I believe in a very, very bright future for Tennessee football. I believe that there’s a minor speed bump that we’re going through, but the kids that are in our program right now and the kids that are being recruited are going to have a chance to play and chase championships.” First of all, we know that Tennessee fans would have loved a ‘bigger name hire’, but what self-respecting head coach would want to walk into

So who IS Tennessee?

This week Tennessee’s new AD Danny White – fresh from the University of Central Florida – has been trying to hire a new head coach. The rumor is that he’s already got one, and Tuesday’s press conference will tell the world that they’ve hired [add name here]. But my question: How are the real Tennessee?  THE BAD NEWS The NCAA is going to be up your ass There’s no kinder way to put this, but it’s very possible that if all the Jeremy Pruitt coaching violations are as true as they’ve been written, we might not have a UT Volunteers program worth looking for at least 3 or 4 years. It might not be death penalty scale, but it might

Pruitt fired as Tennessee coach for ’cause’

Jeremy Pruitt has been fired by the University of Tennessee after an investigation into recruiting violations. It certainly will help the university that they won’t have to pay the extra money under the $12 million he was owed as part of the contract. AD Philip Fulmer will also ‘retire’ as well. ESPN reported: “Sources told ESPN that Tennessee’s recruitment of Amarius Mims, the No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 19 player overall in the 2021 ESPN 300 rankings, is part of the inquiry“. It is under no coincidence – nope, none whatever – that Pruitt compiled a 3-7 record in 2020, highlighted by a record loss against Kentucky – a year after giving him a massive pay raise and contract
