Georgia leads AP Top 25 preseason poll

In unsurprising news, the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 is led by Georgia, ahead of Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU. USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington round out the Top 10. In all, there are 6 SEC, 5 Pac-12, 5 B1G, 4 Big 12, 3 ACC as well as Notre Dame, and, er, Tulane. In a bigger statement, Yahoo Sports pointed out that all of the Top 7 will be in the SEC or B1G next year. Surprisingly, Texas is the top team in the Big 12 at 11. We thought they’d be higher. Here is the complete list. 1. Georgia 2. Michigan 3. Ohio State 4. Alabama 5. LSU 6. USC 7. Penn State 8.

After Week 3: Ranking the SEC

When the refs steal the a lot of the game’s limelight, you know that the reffing was terrible. And in the Mississippi State vs Memphis Penn State vs Auburn clashes, they were beyond terrible. No, stupid press releases about how these dumbf**ks screwed up the call might make the SEC feel better, but these guys should be suspended. I mean, they are costing coaches their potential livelihoods here! Apart from that – and that’s like saying: “Apart from that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?” – here’s our SEC rankings. Georgia (3-0): The Dawgs look unbeatable at the moment. Sure, their secondary gave up 2 or 3 big plays to South Carolina, but the strength was meant to be the

Week 3 SEC Preview: Auburn at Penn State, Alabama at Florida

After the relative dross of SEC games last week, Week 3 of the season – on paper anyway – is a beautiful mixture of in-house SEC clashes, and some ‘dope’ out-of-conference clashes, which are the filling of some pretty dry bread that you can avoid if you take it away. For a lot of people looking at the season early, it was all going to be about Alabama vs Florida in The Swamp, with a packed Gainseville crowd looking for blood. There was going to be a new Alabama after the NFL had once again decimated the team, and Dan Mullen was going to pull of miracles? Oh, and then we saw what Alabama could do, and dear Lord it’s

Should Mississippi State fire Joe Moorhead?

Twitter’s great in the morning. You can catch up with the daily highlights, wonder why people wake up and immediately write about hating or loving things about Donald Trump (DRINK SOME COFFEE PEOPLE!), as well as the usual prayer requests, sniping between Georgia and Florida fans, SEC rankings, excited-about-the-future Vols pictures (CUE HALF-NAKED MAN IN ORANGE AND WHITE OVERALLS)…..and a number of Mississippi State fans already asking for the head of Joe Moorhead. After all, the Bulldogs have lost four straight, including a stunning loss on the road to Tennessee and blowouts by Auburn and LSU. It’s been miserable. This season, we’ve seen the Cowbells that were so loud last year have gone very, very quiet. It’s gotten so bad that

Top 10 Non-SEC National Title Contenders

Sad as we may say, there are National Title Contenders outside of the SEC. And yes, we know they actually exist. Anyway, so here we go: Clemson: Dabo Swinney won one a couple of a seasons ago, and the Tigers’ defense is going to be an absolute beast this year. Oh, and offensively they’ll be pretty good too. We expect them to beat Texas A&M, walk the ACC, and win their home game at season-end against South Carolina. Ohio State: Urban Meyer’s a horrible piece of human garbage, but his QB Dwayne Haskins is the real deal. The school also churns out talented player after talented player. Unless they play Iowa. Oklahoma: The Sooners have an insanely talented coach in Lincoln

College Football desperately needs an eight-team play-off

After penning an overly-long article about Alabama and Ohio State and why Ohio State didn’t get into the play-off but Alabama did, we at the SEC Football Blog also thought it was time to say what should be done about College Football. Why? Because if we’re honest, we’re getting bored of the arguments about who should be in, and who shouldn’t. In the past, we hated the BCS and its computers, we hated the pollsters, we hated everything that defined a National Champion.  We hated the BCS so much that we put in a play-off committee to decide things. Who then screwed things up. They seemed to be able to shoot themselves in the foot, be inconsistent, and seem like they

Alabama’s in, but the Crimson Tide deserve it?

I love SEC Football as much as the rest of ’em, but there’s no way I can look at myself straight in the face and say: ‘We had the best conference. We deserved two teams in the play-off. College Football is great.’ Why? As a conference (apart from Georgia, Auburn and Alabama), the rest of the conference weren’t particularly great…or stank out right. As a conference, big names like LSU and Florida were a side conversation, Mississippi State lurched from looking like world-beaters one week to ‘world’ the next, Texas A&M wasn’t in the discussion, Ole Miss and Missouri were mostly interesting because of their great offenses and terrible defenses….and we all know how bad Arkansas, Tennessee and Vanderbilt was. When your

Mississippi State hires Joe Moorhead to be new head coach

Mississippi State has hired Penn State’s offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead to be the school’s new head coach, after Dan Mullen left for Florida a few days ago. Moorhead was an exceptional OC for Penn State, helping the school win the Big Ten Championship as well as a 10-2 season with an explosive, high-paced offense that starred QB Tracy McSorley and more’s the case, RB Saquon Barkley. He’s well-known for a run-pass-option offense, and it produces points. A ton of them. Penn State averaged 453 yards per game and 6.6 yards per play. He was 5th in the country for TDs, and 5th in the country for points per game with 41.6 – up from 37.6 last year. While Penn State

Is LSU really the third best team in the SEC? Week 8 Rankings

LSU suddenly look as though it has something to make its fans excited about. After the Troy disaster, the Tigers have won three straight (Florida, Auburn and Ole Miss), and even Danny Etling does not look as bad as Gary Danielson makes him out to be (some people think Gary Danielson’s better than WE think he is). But are the Tigers the third best team in the SEC? It’s between them at Texas A&M. A&M was on a bye week, but with LSU’s road victory – albeit an Ole Miss team that is inept at stopping the run, they move up to third. Auburn’s also pretty good, too. So here you are. Alabama: Nick Saban will probably be yelling at backup
