Georgia leads AP Top 25 preseason poll

  In unsurprising news, the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 is led by Georgia, ahead of Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU. USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington round out the Top 10. In all, there are 6 SEC, 5 Pac-12, 5 B1G, 4 Big 12, 3 ACC as well as Notre Dame, and, er, Tulane. In a bigger statement, Yahoo Sports pointed out that all of the Top 7 will be in the SEC or B1G next year. Surprisingly, Texas is the top team in the Big 12 at 11. We thought they’d be higher. Georgia is Thanos, Get out of the way

When Kirby Smart started rolling out the classes that he did, Georgia fans went from the ‘expecting-but-really-hoping’ type to ‘expecting’ type. This season, with Alabama disappointing as much as they did, Georgia has become inevitable. Inevitable teams in college football don’t sideswipe others out of the way. Remember Thanos had his struggles with The Avengers before eventually taking things over. Georgia’s struggles weren’t with the best of ’em. They were plain bad against Kent State and even worse against Missouri, but came through those battles. And the war against Ohio State? Rivalry Week: SEC game predictions (plus the other one!)

Before we talk about SEC rivalries, let’s think about the one that’s not going to be played this week: Virginia and Virginia Tech. It’s not because of COVID-19. It’s not because of food poisoning through both camps that means both teams can’t field players. National Championship Preview: Alabama vs Ohio State

Since we last wrote this, here’s some news: Alabama is going to play in the National Championship against Ohio State (more about that later). Crimson Tide WR DeVonta Smith won the Heisman. Speaking of Auburn, the Tigers just hired Bryan Harsin to be their head coach. Former South Carolina OC Mike Bobo will be new OC, and former Vanderbilt HC Derek Mason will be the new DC. The SEC should follow Ohio State’s example

Ohio State put out what their plan for college football games should be during games. Capacity will be capped at 20%. The capacity at The Horseshoe will be no more than 20,988 at any one time. There will be no tailgating. Face covering will be required at games.   Now, while you can enforce the first one, stopping 20,000 people going into local Columbus bars before games isn’t an option, so you’ll have to trust them. You can enforce the third one, by either supplying Ohio State facemasks at the game or not letting people who won’t wear them or booting those who persistently don’t wear them during the game. Jake Fromm declares for the NFL, Cade Mays declares for Transfer Portal

Two incidents, two moments, two…..Georgia? After a ton of Bulldog wailing and gnashing of teeth, Georgia quarterback decided that he’d had enough of Sanford, and declared for the NFL. For someone who has got worse as the season has gone on, his decision was questionable to say the least. For us, Fromm – after being taken in the 3rd round at best – is going to be a backup quarterback for a while. He’ll get his chance in 2022, and he’ll do fine. Football loves winners. Sure, there are the celebrated losers (Charlie Weis in his time in Kansas), but we care more about the trophies, the Heismans, and the winners.
