Hugh Freeze out at Auburn: Good riddance

A few weeks ago Auburn was rolling against Georgia. For the first time in weeks, Jackson Arnold was looking like the five-star prospect that Oklahoma had recruited him to be. The offense was absolutely HUMMING, and so was Jordan-Hare. Then came a call on a fumble on the goalline that was egregious to say the least that stopped momentum. Then there was a free timeout given to Kirby Smart thanks to ‘HandClap Gate’ and a targeting call that wasn’t given despite the fact that anyone watching could see it was targeting. To be honest, if you thought that a game was fixed, it would be his one. But instead yelling at the TV interviewer, flying into the locker room to

Florida (finally) fires Billy Napier

I have a friend called Davis who’s a Florida fan. He’s still basking in the wake of Florida’s March Madness victory, but he said yesterday was one of the best days of his life. Why? Because Florida finally fired Billy Napier. Napier had come aboard after two bowl wins following brilliant seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette, but his 11-14 record – including zero wins against Georgia, 1-4 against Tennesee and 1-3 against Florida State. He was also 5-17 against ranked opponents, which probably would have made him a hero at Penn State, but in the SEC (where he went 12-16 in conference play), that was never going to go down well. But the biggest thing that proved to be Napier’s downfall was

WEEK 7: A Red River Runs Through It

Listen from someone who’s been to the Red River Shoot-Out: It’s a great scene, but the rest of it is kinda crappy. First of all, getting anywhere near the stadium sucks, unless you’re incredibly lucky (Dallas’ transport system is fine, but there’s no-one giving directions). Secondly, getting into the stadium via Big Tex is not a fun experience. Shit, entering any part of the stadium a little close to kick-off is not a fun experience. In fact, it’s a crush. Thirdly, when the Texas sun beats on those steel benches – and remember the stadium is round so there’s no breeze that can through it – it’s hot as all hell. But once you forget about that, the pageantry and

SEC Preview: This SEC week is going to be a strugglebus….

First of all, there are five SEC teams getting in the College Football Play-Off as things stand. That’s Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee. Texas A&M and possibly South Carolina are on the outside looking in. Of course Greg Sankey more in, but so does every conference. The street-fight is going to get boring, and we’ll going to give you the lowdown on tie-breakers next week. The second thing: This SEC week is a struggle to preview, because most of the games aren’t great – one of this blog’s endless bug-bears is that any of these games actually exist at this time of year. SO, GAMES WE ARE INTERESTED IN:  No.5 Indiana at No.2 Ohio State (-12.5): We’d love to

Week 3: Missouri’s in a ranked match-up!

After two games against basketball schools, No.6 Missouri finally has a team against a Power-4 team, and it’s Boston College, who have found themselves ranked (No.24). It’s the only ranked match-up in SEC play, although there is a helmet game when Alabama rolls into Camp Randall to play Wisconsin on what with a vociferous atmosphere. Having said all of that, South Carolina could go 2-0 in SEC play when No.17 LSU comes into town after thumping Kentucky on the road last week. Meanwhile, Georgia hosts Kentucky, Florida hosts Texas A&M, Ole Miss travels to Wake Forest, Oklahoma plays Tulane, and Arkansas hosts UAB, and Vanderbilt tries to go 3-0 at mighty Georgia State. Auburn plays New Mexico, it’s Mississippi State

WEEK 2 SEC Predictions: Can Texas beat Michigan?

When a National title pretender goes to last year’s National Championship winner — and it’s two of the biggest name’s in college football – everyone’s gonna be pretty excited. College Gameday AND Fox’s Preview Show are going to be at Texas v Michigan. The place is obviously sold-out. It’s a massive test of where both teams are. Elsewhere in the SEC, it’s going to be a fun game between ranked NC State and Tennessee,  No.16 Oklahoma State visiting Arkansas, and the first SEC Conference match-up between South Carolina and Kentucky. And there’s also the match-up between Mississippi State and Arizona State which will be a riveting indication of wonderful football. So here we go (in terms of games weren’t interested

SEC END OF SEASON AWARDS

It’s award season, so we want to throw around some awards ourselves, before those Heisman people get in our way and make us look bad. So here we go. Some of them for the best….some of them for the worst. Thanks for a wonderful season. FEEL FREE TO TELL US WHERE WE WERE WRONG! SEC HEISMAN Jayden Daniels (LSU): Daniels hardly put a foot wrong this season, throwing for 3,800 yards and 40 TDs and rushing for 1,100 yards more and 10 more. He’s on the real Heisman favorite, too. Nominated: Cody Schrader (Missouri), Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) Jayden Daniels won the Heisman. SEC RUSHER OF THE YEAR Cody Schrader (Missouri): Ran for 1,499 yards and 13 yards in the

So who’s gonna be next for Texas A&M?

Now Jimbo’s been pushed out of the door at Texas A&M, immediately tongues are wagging about who’s next up. Here are our runners and riders, with Duke’s Mike Elko seemingly the run away fan favorite. THE FAVORITE Mike Elko: Has turned around Duke from a national joke to a ACC competitor, which has included a win over Clemson this year. Currently 15-8 in Raleigh. Was a great defensive coordinator in College Station. Defenses average 25th in the country between 2018-2021. More importantly, wasn’t fired by Fisher. WHO SHOULD GET A CALL Brian Hartline: Ohio State is a bigger job than Texas A&M, and all he’s done in his time at Ohio State is recruit talent. Puts endless amount of wide

Week 10 SEC Previews: UGA v Ole Miss, Tennessee v Missouri etc

This week College Gameday is going to ‘The Classic City’ for Ole Miss’ visit to Georgia, which should be a lot of fun. It should provide Georgia with yet another resume game after the victory over ranked Missouri last week, while a win for Ole Miss will leave them still in the hunt for a New Year’s Day Bowl and perhaps the SEC West title. Oh, and everyone can talk about the Lane Kiffin a little more, too. Elsewhere, it’s No.13 Tennessee at No.14 Missouri, No.8 Alabama at Kentucky, Florida at No.19 LSU, Auburn at South Carolina, Mississippi State at Texas A&M, and the Jefferson Sports Pilot Game in the form of Vanderbilt at South Carolina 1. No.9 Ole Miss

Week 10 SEC Predictions: THE Alabama/LSU game + Georgia hosts Missouri

You’d not normally put LSU’s trip to Alabama in the same breath as Georgia v Missouri, but give us a second. The LSU v Alabama is a monster. Whether it’s a poor Alabama side playing a poor LSU side or whether it’s a 1 v 2 match-up, the game ALWAYS has an electric atmosphere, and chock-a-block with future NFL talent. This one’s particularly interesting, because the winner could decide the West (or at least the joint division winner!). And with Georgia v Missouri, the winner is in the driving seat of the SEC East (although Missouri still has to play in-division rivals Tennessee and Florida, while Georgia’s still got a battle with Tennessee ahead). Anyway, A&M goes to No.10 Ole
