Recruiting: Kentucky adds QB recruit

After only having one commitment since recruiting season started, Joker Phillips added to the recent signing of defensive end Avonte Bell by getting QB Reese Phillips to commit to the ‘Cats. Kentucky beat SEC rival Mississippi State to Phillips’ commitment – which is quite a coup for The Joker. Phillips is a two-star quarterback, but is listed by Rivals as being ‘pro-style’. The SEC Football Blog had erroneously reported that Vanderbilt had offered to the ‘other Phillips’, but after further investigation, Vanderbilt was on the player’s list, but had not offered to him. Vanderbilt fans were quick to point out to the SEC Football Blog’s Twitter feed that Vandy has already got two quarterback commitments – four-star recruit Johnathon McCrary of Ellenwood,

Recruiting News: Mississippi State lands new QB

Mississippi State has relieved its worries at quarterback a little, the Clarion-Ledger has reported. Jamil Golden, who is seen as a dual threat quarterback, enrolled just before summer classes, meaning that he’ll be available for the start of the season. Golden had offers from Arkansas and South Alabama, but spurned the Razorbacks – obviously – with the chance of starting as soon as September. The Bulldogs have Tyler Russell and Dak Prescott took snaps at practice, and Nick Schuessler was part of their signing group. Schuessler was not highly recruited in his home state of Georgia, and only had one FBS offer from Colorado State. Arkansas, however, also showed interest.

New Recruiting News: Kentucky grabs Florida commit

While other teams have been loading up on their commitment arsenals for the 2013 season, it’s been fair to say that Joker Phillips and his team at Kentucky have been rather slower than most. Having said that, the commitment of three-star defensive end Alvonte Bell to Lexington – Phillips’ second commit of the season- could start some sort of storm. Phillips beat Florida State, Louisville, Clemson, West Virginia, Notre Dame and both Mississippi schools to the commitment of the 6 ft 6, 240-lb player.   THE BOTTOM LINE: Could this be the new Colin Ukwu? Cats fans hope so! If Bell stays – and with all the ‘big names’ scouring around Bell’s signature, it’s not a done deal – then
