Looking Back: The Top 10 SEC Games, Atmospheres and Players of 2011

Looking back, it was another glorious year for the SEC. Another National Championship was won, with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide taking home the bacon. The Crimson Tide beat LSU 21-0 in a re-match in which did both of the things they went out to do: Dominate AND win. In the first game against the Tigers in front over 92,000 in Tuscaloosa, they’d done a lot of dominating, but not a lot of winning. Harvey Updyke didn’t play football for the University of Alabama. Harvey Updyke didn’t attend the University of Alabama. But the former Texas State Police Officer did something in Alabama’s name that will love on long in infamy: He poisoned the oaks at Toomer’s Corner, which are always dressed in toilet paper after the Auburn Tigers have victory. Recruiting Focus: Why did Robert Nkemdiche opt for Clemson?

The consensus No.1 player in high school football, Robert Nkemdiche,  today stunned the college football world by committing to Clemson over Alabama or LSU. But why did he decided to play his football in the ‘other’ Death Valley for the ‘other’ Tigers? Recruiting: Alabama lands Recruit No.17

Junior College offensive lineman Leon Brown has signed for Alabama, Al.com has reported. The lineman is Nick Saban’s 17th of the 2013 season, and hails from Asa College in Brooklyn, New York. He told BamaOnline: “I talked to [Alabama offensive line coach] Coach Stoutland and Coach Saban and they both said they were proud about my decision and couldn’t wait to get me down there. I play left tackle- they like the way I play and feel like I have a chance to come in and contribute.” BOTTOM LINE: At 6ft 6, he’ll be fantastic for ‘Bama’s running game, which has been one of their constants over the years. Recruiting: Atlanta media frets over Henry’s visit to Alabama

The Atlanta media is already fretting about Georgia recruiting, and it isn’t even football season yet. On the AJC’s website, the paper says: “Derrick Henry: Should UGA be worried about 5-star tailback visiting Alabama?” Henry, you remember, was seen as one of Georgia’s biggest recruiting coups when he plumped for the Bulldogs in July. But Alabama has four things in its favour. Firstly, the Tide have  just won a National Championship – its second in three years. Spring Meetings: Schedule news, and the bottom line.

News just in from Friday’s SEC Spring Meetings voting: The 6-1-1 scheduling has – at last and despite Les Miles and Steve Spurrier’s call for something different – passed as expected. The format will mean that the Auburn vs Georgia rivalry will continue, along with Alabama vs Tennessee and (unfortunately for Miles), LSU vs Florida. Arkansas vs Missouri will be a new rivalry, as will Vanderbilt vs Ole Miss, Mississippi State vs Kentucky, and Texas A&M vs South Carolina. Florida AD Jeremy told reporters at the event that the vote was “not unanimous”, which sadly means that they’ll be arguing about the scheduling stuff next year, too. THE BOTTOM LINE: This is a good thing. The SEC NEEDS those traditional rivalries

Schedule grumblings dominate SEC Spring Meetings talk

It’s as though everyone’s either on a schedule, or grumbling about them these days. And the SEC coaches are no different at the Spring Meetings in Destin, FL. A few points: There some seriousness in discussions of nine-game SEC schedule, with Nick Saban advocating it, according to Clay Travis.. “Clay Travis (@ClayTravisBGID: Biggest news on SEC football coaches meeting was seriousness of 9 game schedule. Told Saban advocated for 9.” Steve Spurrier wants divisions decided not by overall SEC record, but divisional record, and boy is he banging his drum about it.
