Recruiting news: Bulldogs grab monster QB commitment

The Mississippi State Bulldogs added two commitments on Monday, the Starkville Daily News has reported. Floridian quarterback Cord Sandberg – noted by the News as being “top quarterback prospect on the MSU recruiting board” told the Daily News: “”I wanted to play football in the SEC. That was important to me. I know what Coach Mullen has done with other quarterbacks and I wanted to be a part of that.” Sandberg was given a four-star rating by Yahoo Rivals and was listed as having offers from SEC rivals LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt as well as interest from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Today was the official releasing of the SEC schedules, and here is a breakdown of each team’s fixtures list. The SEC Football Blog will have breakdown of each team’s schedule in our preview for the season, but right now, here’s a taster of what’s to come. Sunday recruiting news: Dawgs grab new WRs

It’s been widely reported but this is the news out of Florida – the Georgia Bulldogs have gone down south and grabbed wide receiver Reggie Davis. Tallahassee-based Davis, ranked the 17th wide receiver in the nation, was recruited far and wide by schools, including Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Tennessee out of the SEC and Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, NC State, and Oregon – amongst others – outside of the conference. The 6ft tall Davis – a four-star receiver according to Yahoo Rivals – has a 4.55 40, and weighs 158-lbs. Ole Miss grabs highly-touted QB

Ole Miss has beaten some of its biggest SEC rivals to three-star QB Ryan Buchanan, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger has reported. The Jackson, Mississippi QB was recruited by the Rebels, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt and cross-state rival Mississippi State, as well as Big XII giant Oklahoma State amongst others. Buchanan told the paper: “I am 100% solid on it. I prayed about it. Two weeks ago I wasn’t sure about where I was going. But I’m at peace about it now. I’m fully confident and not changing my decision.” He added: “I love Coach (Hugh) Freeze and I love the vision that Ole Miss has for the future and I want to be a part of that.” The 6ft 4

Auburn picks up new commitment

Just because the Spring Meetings have finished, doesn’t mean recruitment ends. Auburn University has picked up the commitment of cornerback Jahmere Irvin-Sills from Maryland. He’s been ranked three-star by Rivals, and had a bunch of interest all along the Eastern seaboard. The recruitment was somewhat of a blow to West Virginia, who had been  interested in Irvin-Sills for a while. Offering Irvin-Sills – on top of Auburn – were (in no particular order) – Ole Miss, West Virginia, NC State, Boston College, Connecticut, Hawaii, Houston, Maryland, Rutgers, Southern Miss and Temple. Penn State was also said to be interested, but no offer was forthcoming. Safety coach Tommy Thigpen did the recruiting.

Spring Meetings: SEC coaches vote in $300-per-game stipend

The SEC coaches might have just done something that could change the course of college football. This tweet came from Scott Hood at Gamecock Central: Scott Hood ‏@ScottHood63 In case you missed it, Steve Spurrier told me last night the SEC coaches unanimously approved giving FB players $300 per game for expenses. This isn’t just big news. This is massive news. Tuesday Spring Meetings: Spurrier, the 6-1-1, and other stories

It’s been a busy first day at the SEC Spring Meetings with everybody getting to find out how they felt about a play-off. Everyone wants a four-team play-off, and in particular the four-best teams in the country. But Steve Spurrier said that actually, the winners of the East and West should be decided ONLY on their records in their divisions. He said: “We’ve lost seven games in the last two years, and five of them are to Auburn and Arkansas. Hugh Freeze isn’t new to the SEC but he’s new to the head coaching business. But he’s come to familiar waters – Oxford, Mississippi – to take over the new head coaching job.
