LSU QB to transfer to Vanderbilt – Reports

LSU back-up quarterback Stephen Rivers is going to another SEC school to try and ply his trade, according to reports. Rivers – the brother of San Diego Chargers starter Phillip – told NOLA.com that he’s close to going to Vanderbilt, which would leave the Tigers light at quarterback. He said: “I took a visit there and really enjoyed it…It’s a good option for me because it’s really close to home. It’s not official and I’m still trying to get everything worked out. I’m still open. I’m going to see how things are going to work out.” Rivers had already said that he was transferring in February. LSU’s Spring Game in on Saturday, so it would be interesting to see if he

Georgia has a 5-star day at National Signing Day

Usually when it comes to Georgia fans, they like to swear in the general direction of Mark Richt. They blame him when the Bulldogs lose. They blame him when the Bulldog players get arrested. They blame him when the Bulldog players get injured. But now, Georgia fans are actually happy with Mark Richt- especially after National Signing Day. The Georgia coach landed No.14 player on the ESPN 300 list DE Lorenzo Carter (despite the close attentions of Florida, LSU and Florida State), which definitely got the fans buzzing – especially those who had been critical of Richt for not filling out his staff after defensive co-ordinator Todd Grantham decided to leave for Louisville. The 6ft 5, 324lb player said: “The defense

Florida QB Murphy to transfer

Back-up Florida Gators quarterback Tyler Murphy is to transfer despite starting seven games in the place of injured starter Jeff Driskel last season. Murphy is to join old offensive co-ordinator Steve Addazio at Boston College, where he reported to be enrolling as soon as this week. Murphy had a mixed season for an awful Gators team, passing for 1,1216 yards, 6 TDs and 5 INTS, and rushing for 61 yards and 3 TDs. The good news for the Gators is that Driskel is going to return after getting injured in the second game of the season, but is expected back by Spring Practice. BOTTOM LINE: If Driskel stays fit, it won’t matter that Murphy’s gone to BC. However if he

Missouri names starting QB

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel has named James Franklin as his starting quarterback for the first game of the season against Murray State. Franklin, who spent a lot of 2013 injured, still had 1,562 yards passing with 10 TDs and 7 INTS. He beat redshirt freshman Maty Mauk to the finish, although it has been reported that Mauk may well get some in-game play as experience for the SEC. Pinkel said: “James has shown that he’s very capable of leading this team at a high level, and we fully expect him to do that….He’s really developed as a leader of this offense, and of this team, and we feel he’s ready to be the difference-maker he was before all of the

Big Game Mark? Kentucky Wildcats 2013 College Football Preview

Well, it wasn’t fun under the Joker, was it? Things went backwards. In 2010 the Wildcats went from 6-7 to 5-7 in 2011 to 2-10 in 2010. In fact, REALLY backwards. So much backwards that Kentucky are eating $4.5m over the next 2 years NOT to have him as the head coach. They replace him with Mark Stoops, the former defensive co-ordinator at Florida State and brother of Oklahoma coach Bob, who’s re-ignited the passions of a fanbase with some bold talk, some good recruiting (29th in the country in 2013), and some exciting co-ordinators. Last year, it wasn’t funny. After blown out by their most hated rival Louisville on opening weekend, the Cats then beat Kent State, before then

Will the Gators eat the SEC alive? 2013 Florida Gators Preview

Like a lot of seasons the Florida Gators are where they are used to be: ranked, one of three favorites for the SEC East and therefore a place in the SEC Championship, off a Top-5 recruiting class (meaning there’s MORE great talent coming through). But unlike other seasons (particularly under a certain Mr Meyer and Mr Spurrier), there are still some massive questions around the team’s offense. So here we go… LAST SEASON: With a new coach at the helm in Will Muschamp, the Gators finished 11-2 (7-1 in the SEC). This is including a victory at Texas A&M (now quite the achievement – imagine what would have happened if this game was in November, folks), and wins against LSU, South

Alabama back-up QB to transfer

Alabama back-up quarterback Philip Ely is to transfer to Toledo, the player said on his Twitter account. He said: “Ready to make a change in my life for the better and I thank everyone who has supported me through this process. Go Rockets!” He added: “And a special thanks to my former teammates at bama. I love and will miss ya’ll! Goodluck this year and go get number 3!!” The redshirt sophomore obviously doesn’t see a lot of hope of seeing playing time behind current QB AJ McCarron. Aaron Murray and Ely both attended Plant High School in Tampa, FL. He threw only 4 passes in anger for the Tide last year, completing three of them with a touchdown. That’s

Maxwell Smith named as Kentucky’s starting quarterback

Joker Phillips has made Maxwell Smith his starting quarterback for the 2012 season. Smith, who threw for 819 yards and 4 TDs (and 4 INTs) for the Wildcats last year, was named earlier this week. The new QB told the Courier-Journal: “I heard about it this morning. Coach Joker and Coach Sanders were together and they called me in, and that’s when I found out. I felt good, felt great. That’s what I’ve been working for since I was a little kid, to get a job to start on an SEC team. It might not have been SEC at the time; you know I’m a West Coast guy. It might’ve been Pac-10 at the time, but I’m glad to be

SEC Preseason Preview: Can Auburn roar in the SEC West?

There is no school out there that could have had a more horrible off-season than the Auburn Tigers. And only one incident capped it: Two former Auburn Tigers – Ladarious Phillips and Ed Christian – and sophomore offensive linesman Eric Mack were shot at a pool party in mid-June. Phillips and Christian lost their lives. The news rocked the University to the core – and it’ll be interesting to see what effect – if any – it has on the Tigers are the start of the year. In less important news, brilliant running back Michael Dyer was dismissed from the team and is now playing FCS football, and Auburn can still roll the Toomer’s Oaks for the 2012 season (although

SEC Media Days: Les Miles’ best quotes

LSU coach Les Miles was his usual quotable self at his SEC Media Conference his Hoover, Alabama. Here are a list of some of the more juicy things he said in what was an unusually straight press conference. About the Alabama National Championship Game Loss: “‘I’ve seen [the game] a couple times. There weren’t that many plays for us on offense for me to spend that much time [on]. On his EA commercial: “I really thought that Mike the Tiger stole the show. We didn’t get along on the set. He was kind of working the camera. It was really a difficult time”. On Tyrann Mathieu and (yet another) Twitter outburst on July 13th: “I didn’t get the Twitter rant exactly.
