LSU loses WRs coach to 49ers

LSU’s wide receivers coach Adam Henry has decided to return to the NFL, taking a job with the San Francisco 49ers as the team’s wide receivers coach. Henry was in the job for two years after moving to Baton Rouge for five years with the Oakland Raiders, where he was offensive quality control coach and then tight ends coach. Under his watch, Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry were major difference-makers for the LSU and then in their rookie years in the NFL with the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. Lane Kiffin nixes NFL gig to stay as Alabama OC

Lane Kiffin has announced that he will stay as Alabama’s offensive co-ordinator, turning his back on the opportunity to move into the NFL and grab the same position at the San Francisco 49ers. Kiffin, who’s never been known for stability in a job in college football, raised some eyebrows when he first arrived in Alabama in 2014, but had a successful time with his offense last season, helping to take the Crimson Tide to a SEC Championship title and the College Football Play-Off Semi-Final. Derrick Thomas to go into College Football Hall Of Fame – ESPN

The late, great Alabama linebacker Derrick Thomas has finally been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, ESPN is reporting. Brent McMurphy tweeted: “Former Alabama LB Derrick Thomas inducted into College Football Hall of Fame, sources told ESPN“. The news isn’t great just for Thomas’ family, but it’s also great for Alabama football and the SEC in general. Thomas – who died in 2000 in a car crash – was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2009. In college, Thomas’ legacy is incredible. He set the NCAA career sack record with 52 sacks, which still stands today. He got the Butkus Award in 1988, as well as being voted an All-American. Johnny Manziel’s Pro Day impresses

Johnny Manziel’s NFL Pro Day impressed, according to reports. According to an ESPN report, all NFL teams but the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears were represented as they watched the 2012 Heisman Winner go through his reps. According to another report, Manziel didn’t have a perfect throwing day, but a couple of those misses should be blamed on Mike Evans (bobbling one out of bounds) and Travis Labhart (dropping one). Manziel, McCarron lead list of offensive invites to NFL Combine

The quarterbacking foursome of the Four Ms lead SEC names invited to the NFL Combine. Texas A&M’s Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, Alabama’s AJ McCarron, Georgia’s Aaron Murray and LSU’s Zach Mettenberger have all been invited to the Combine, which starts on February 19th. Connor Shaw at South Carolina has also been invited. While Manziel, McCarron and Shaw will probably make the trip, it’s not certain if Murray and Mettenberger will have recovered enough from injuries they sustained at the end of the year to partake – which may drop their draft status, despite both players’ electric arms (Mettenberger’s particularly). LSU left tackle La’el Collins has decided to stay at LSU for his senior season. The giant tackle, who weight 315 pounds and stands 6 ft 5, decided to stay in school after starting for 25 games that he could have featured in. It hasn’t been a good off-season for LSU fans in terms of juniors decided to go to the draft, with star wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr, Jarvis Landry, star redshirt sophomore running back Jeremy Hill, and Collins’ cohort on the offensive line, Trai Turner, deciding that it would be time to go pro. LSU RB Hill and Guard Turner declare for draft

LSU junior running back Jeremy Hill and guard Trai Turner have both declared for the NFL Draft. Hill said on his Twitter account: “I am a Tiger for life. I will forever be grateful to my LSU fans, friends, coaches and family. Georgia DC Grantham going to Louisville- reports

Georgia defensive co-ordinator Todd Grantham is going to Louisville, reports say. ESPN’s Joe Schad, quoting sources, said Grantham will get $1m-per-year guaranteed on a five-year contract. Grantham came to Georgia in 2010 after stints at Virginia Tech, Michigan State and in the NFL with Indianapolis, Cleveland and Dallas in varying assistant head coach positions. In 2013 Georgia’s defence was 79th in the country in points conceded, 40th in run defense, 60th in passing yards allowed.
