A note to the incoming Alabama football athlete

You wouldn’t know that a below-average sized, thinning-haired, 69-year old male who last played the game when your grandparents were alive, would be able to coax you – the giant among giant on the high school football stage – enough to go and play in a State that to most people would be one they wouldn’t want to visit, let alone live.   And yet year after year, the Pied Piper of Tuscaloosa brings the Gods of American High School into campus and gets them to sign on the dotted line. So here’s a letter to that class. You could replay this letter for many of the major programs, by the way. ***** If you come to Tuscaloosa, you’ll

Jalen Hurts transferring to Oklahoma

Jalen Hurts didn’t last a long time in College Football’s infamous transfer window: He’s going to Oklahoma. In a piece in the Player’s Tribune, he thanked Alabama for his career, and then said that he was “taking his talents” to Norman. “For that I have so many people to thank. People who’ve made a deep and lasting impact on my life, just from their paths crossing with mine. People who have helped me, trained me, or flat-out raised me. Or even just believed in me. Thank you, truly.” Hurts found himself behind Tua Tagovailoa for the whole season, although still bagged the headlines in the SEC Championship Game when he took over from his replacement – who was having a

SEC teams getting upset: The most stunning since 2012

We were thinking about doing an article in the shower about the best records in the SEC over the last five years, but they’ve already been nicely covered by everyone from Gridiron Now to Saturday Down South. You’ll be astonished to hear that Alabama’s got the best home record in the last five years, and the crappiest home record is Kentucky’s. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise to you to find out that after the 2016 season happened, every single SEC team in the last 5 years has winning records in the comfort of their own homes (Kentucky was the last to get to black but did so after going 5-2 last year). Last year’s two worst home records

Who holds the least in the SEC? (Hint: It’s not Bama!)

Every time people think “Alabama offensive line”, there’s an automatic assumption that because their running backs succeed (and over the years, the success has been nothing short of stunning at college football level), it’s because they are holding the whole time and don’t get called for it. Hell, we even remember being in LSU’s student section for the 2012 loss to the Crimson Tide, and every time Alabama made an offensive move, someone would scream: “Holding! Holding! Holding!”. Apparently, everyone but the Crimson Tide gets called for grabbing, and it’s all Nick Saban’s fault. But after talking to our friends at Sport Source Analytics, we realised that this wasn’t exactly true. Over the last two years, the teams that have gotten

So Who’s Going to Win The National Championship Game?

So if you follow us on Twitter (@SECBlog), you’ll know that when we asked the simple question “Would non-Alabama fans root for Alabama in the National Championship Game?”, only one or two out of 40 replies said: “Yes”. Other answers ranged from rooting for terrorist factions before Alabama, or going through the punishment Mel Gibson went through in Braveheart before rooting for the Crimson Tide. Well, here’s the fact, Alabama haters: The Alabama Crimson Tide are unbeaten, and back in their second National Title game in a row. They’ve won over 20 games on the bounce and this year’s batch looks absolutely frightening. This year the Tide are again playing Clemson, and Vegas has made them a 6-1/2 point favorite,

Alabama to play USC in 2016

Alabama has confirmed that it will play Southern California in Arlington on September 3rd, 2016. The game will be part of the Cowboys Classic at Cowboys Stadium, and feature two of college football’s biggest powerhouses. And if he stays in a job up to then, it could also feature Lane Kiffin, ‘Bama’s offensive co-ordinator and former head coach of USC, before he was fired during last season. BOTTOM LINE: It’s a great bowl-to-start-the-season game, but personally we would have preferred a home-and-home between the two schools. Alabama in Southern Cal would have been amazing, as would the Trojans visiting Tuscaloosa. JerryWorld’s just a little stale.

Alabama LB arrested for DUI

Alabama linebacker Dillon Lee has been arrested for DUI, it has been reported. The outside linebacker was arrested on Thursday morning on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol by Tuscaloosa police. “At approximately 2 a.m., Tuscaloosa Police responded to the scene of a minor accident with no injuries in the 800 block of 31st street after it was reported one of the drivers was intoxicated. Officers found cause to charge Lee with driving under the influence,” AL.com reported. His arrest photo can be seen here. “I don’t have all of the details at this point and will handle it appropriately once I’ve had a chance to review all of the information”, Alabama coach Nick Saban said via Alabama media

Nick Saban gives thoughts on ‘Saban Rule’

Below is Q&A done with Alabama Coach Nick Saban by Al.com‘s Brandon Marcello on the controversial ‘Saban Rule’, which would force offenses to wait before snapping the football, therefore slowing down the game. ***FIRST PUBLISHED ON AL.COM*** Q: What are your thoughts on the 10-second rule proposal? Saban: “I really don’t necessarily have an opinion on the 10-second rule. I think there are three issues that need to be researched relative to pace of play, the first being player safety. When you look at plays that are run, and a team averages 88 plays, and we average 65 at Alabama, that’s 20-something plays more a game over a 12-game season, that adds up to four more games a year that guys have

By Damn! 2013 Ole Miss Rebels College Football Preview

2012 was an incredible season for Ole Miss, in the fact that they beat Mississippi State, won their bowl game, and they had a great recruiting class. Basically, that’s what you really need for Ole Miss fans, right? But what about 2013? Well, the ‘recruiting class of the ages’ – replete with defensive end Robert Nkemdiche (who – if you believe the reviews – is the second coming of Jadeveon Clowney) – has now touched down in Oxford, and will be strapping pads on and hitting people this September. Hugh Freeze’s team will be out to beat Dan Mullen’s Mississippi State again, and maybe score an upset victory over an LSU or Texas – both of whom are on a

Quick SEC reaction: Week 3

What a Week 3 it was. While Tennessee fans once again spat bullets about losing to Florida at home, they managed to drown their beers and sip some champagne as Lane Kiffin and No.2  USC lost at Pac-12 rival Stanford, we once again had evidence that there’s only one team out there in College Football at the moment: Alabama. The SEC has a lot to catch up. Anyway, here’s the top 10 things about our SEC teams this week: 1) Tennessee lost the game against Florida because it had no running game and its wide receivers couldn’t make easy catches. And when we’re talking easy, we’re talking ones like Justin Hunter’s that absolutely killed the team’s drive. And also, the
