Florida: After the glories of 2020….Now what?

Last season was a weird season for Florida. Florida finished the season winning the SEC East, beating Georgia in the process. They lost a heartbreaker at Texas A&M, saw themselves in a continuing argument with Texas A&M about who should be the country’s 4th-best play-off team….and then lost to heavy underdog LSU at home in a situation that will be a meme for years to come, and then battled Alabama to the end in the SEC Championship Game. Their bowl game – after their freaks Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney – as well as Trevon Grimes – packed up their boots and went to the NFL Draft – ended up with the Gators getting nuked by Oklahoma. Because without those

SEC Preview: Will Texas A&M finally succeed?

Last year, Texas A&M was the most interesting conversation in the SEC. After their win over Florida, we all asked the question: “Should they be in the play-off?”. We questioned Ohio State’s credentials. We argued to death about Notre Dame prior to the Irish getting the green kicked out of them by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Sadly, the Aggies didn’t go the Play-Off – which they arguably deserved ahead 7-0 Ohio State – and there we remained asking more questions. So in 2021, will they finally succeed on reaching Everest? OFFENSE Although he had his issues in his game against Vanderbilt, Kellen Mond came on as quite the leader in 2020 for the Aggies, finishing

SEC Preview: Kentucky: Better-than-bowl eligible?

If there is one team that’s utterly predictable in the last six years in the SEC, it’s Kentucky. Only once in the last six years have the Wildcats lost less than 5 games, and only twice in the last six years have the Wildcats won more than six. They’ve taken advantage of a weak SEC East by consistently beating Missouri (5-1 over that time, Vanderbilt (5-1) and South Carolina (5-1). They aren’t bad against Tennessee (2-4), but against Florida (1-5) and Georgia (0-6), they’ve been hopeless. Against permanent cross-division rival Mississippi State they’ve been moderately successful (3-3), but they’ve not been able to beat Alabama, Auburn, LSU or LSU (although smaller sample sizes). The only team they’ve got a winning

Can LSU recover from their shocking 2020?

In a way, LSU exemplified a lot of teams in the SEC: Lots of offense, not a lot of defense. The two most balanced teams – Alabama and Texas A&M – were in the Top 5 in the country – and even Florida (6th) had issues stopping people. Look, we knew that LSU would take a step back from their set-the-world-alight 2020. The good players either declared for the draft, or decided to opted out for COVID reasons, or opt out during the season. Basically, LSU was a running a threadbare organisation. But we didn’t know how threadbare they were until they stepped on the field against Mississippi State….and were outplayed by them. And yees, you would have expected losses to

How will Myles Brennan’s injury affect LSU’s QB race?

News came through yesterday that Myles Brennan – the heir to Joe Burrow before he was hurt in 2020 – injured a shoulder and will need a season-ending operation this year, too. Of course, this is sad news for Tiger Nation – but what does it do to LSU’s QB Depth? Now that Brennan’s injured, and last year’s replacement QB TJ Finley transferred to Auburn (in an effort to fight for the job when current incumbent Bo Nix leaves), LSU’s has a real problem with depth. There’s no denying that the job is basically in the hands of Max Johnson – who started LSU’s last two games – if he doesn’t get injured, too. Johnson had a pretty good set

What will the SEC look like with Oklahoma and Texas?

Yesterday the SEC invited Texas and Oklahoma to the party, starting 2025. Texas and Oklahoma unanimously accepted it – probably the first time they’ve agreed on anything in 401 years. So here we are. And there have been various theories about how it’s going to be split: Pods – This was seen on the SEC Network, but goes generally like this:  North: Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi State East: Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss West: Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M As to whom would play in the SEC Championship Game, it would be the two teams with the best records. Although some might want a SEC semi-final and final, this wouldn’t work because the max

Oklahoma, Texas could be in the SEC by the end of next week

OK, I was wrong. I thought: ‘There’s no way Texas and Oklahoma are going to get into the SEC’. Yeah….so…. According to widespread reporting, it looks as though Oklahoma and Texas will be let into the SEC sometime next week in a 13-1 voting landslide. According to Austin-American Statesman writer Kirk Bohls, who’s as inside-as-you-get with the Longhorn family, the SEC will vote to extend invitations to the ‘Horns and Sooners sometime next week, with only one school objecting to what’s going on. Now it’s being reported by the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Sam Khan that Texas and Oklahoma will inform the Big 12 that they are planning to leave. Yesterday the Big 12 had a meeting to work out

Why Texas and Oklahoma won’t join the SEC

Texas and Oklahoma have reached out to the SEC about leaving the Big 12 and joining College Football’s best conference, the Houston Chronicle has reported. The news came out as Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was giving his press conference at SEC Media Days. When asked about it, he said that it wasn’t surprising they’d want to join because ‘We’ve got the greatest league in ball.’ Apparently, Texas A&M was furious with the thought of their two sworn enemies coming into the conference – particularly as one of the reasons they left in the first place was because ESPN paid Texas an awful lot of money for its own TV network. So we look at the pros and cons

Sankey: Games will be forfeited if teams cancel due to COVID

Greg Sankey is doing something that he hadn’t done for six months – telling SEC schools that if COVID numbers within teams are so bad that they are under the 53 person scholarship limit, they will forfeit games. “We still have roster minimums that exist, just like last year,” the SEC Commissioner said in his remarks at SEC Media Days. “What I’ve identified for consideration among our membership is we remove those roster minimums and you’re expected to play as scheduled. That means your team needs to be healthy to compete, and if not, that game won’t be rescheduled. And thus, to dispose of the game, the ‘forfeit’ word comes up at this point. That’s not policy, and what you
