Alabama is on its own in the SEC – SEC Week 12 Rankings

This week was an embarrassing week for so many teams in the SEC, for varying reasons.

  1. Embarrassing losses – The Citadel beating South Carolina; LSU getting schmacked at Ole Miss
  2. Embarrassing overtimes – Georgia and Florida sneaking by Georgia Southern and Florida Atlantic respectively
  3. Embarrassing rankings – ESPN “ranking” Charleston Southern in their game against Alabama. Charleston Southern was ranked….in the FCS. What a joke.
  4. Embarrassing defense – Arkansas and Mississippi State give up more than 100 points between them in a fun game which had no defenses.
  5. Embarrassing wins – Auburn celebrated getting to bowl eligibility by beating mighty Idaho…and giving up over 30 to them.
  6. Embarrassing goodbyes – Gary Pinkel is waved off by Missouri’s fanbase, who have to watch his team get blanked at home by Tennessee. Wait, the last wasn’t embarrassing so much as sad.

Anyway, here’s your power list in the SEC.

  1. Alabama (1): This team is the second-best team in the country, but if you’re a betting man/woman, bet your house on them to win the National Championship. There is no team playing better out there right now. Oh, and this Derrick Henry guy’s pretty good.
  2. Florida (2): UF’s late-season form really worries me. Florida hasn’t shown up since it won the SEC East. They were awful against Vanderbilt, and awful, awful, awful against Florida Atlantic. And by all reports, helped by an awful pass interference refereeing call in overtime that went their way. Things could get ugly against Florida State and Alabama. And not in a nice way.
  3. Ole Miss (3): Smashed LSU at home and are playing well. Weird that the team they beat on the road is No.1 and the team that smashed them when they went on the road is No.2 in our poll. But anyway…. Can’t wait for them to face Dak Prescott and Mississippi State. It WILL be fun.
  4. Texas A&M (4): A&M fans were overjoyed about the Aggies’ win over a prospectively opponent like Vanderbilt. Guys, it was Vanderbilt. Chill.
  5. Mississippi State (6): Gets up to fifth thanks to its fun, fun, fun win over Arkansas. I still can’t understand why Dak Prescott isn’t being talked about for a Heisman. He’s the best quarterback in college football right now.
  6. Arkansas (5): We certainly can’t talk about Arkansas’ season as being boring, can we? Unfortunately, most of the more exciting games for the Razorbacks have ended in tough, tough losses.
  7. Tennessee (8): Going on the road in freezing conditions on an emotional night for Missouri fans was quite the party spoiler. Do I think Tennessee’s that great? No. Let’s not start putting up statues to Butch Jones for an 8-4 season until he beats an Alabama or Florida, shall we? Or maybe even a ranked team?
  8. LSU (7): LSU’s in free fall at the moment, with the rumors rife that Les Miles is out at Baton Rouge. The last straw could well happen (if) they lose to Texas A&M at home this weekend.
  9. Georgia (8): Georgia’s also a trainwreck. Sony Michel rescued the Dawgs against Georgia Southern in overtime, and there’s nothing nice to say about what’s happening in Athens at the moment. If Les Miles goes, we won’t be surprised if Mark Richt’s out soon after.
  10. Auburn (10): Best win of the season by dropping 56 on Idaho, but giving up 34 is hardly great news. This game against Alabama is going to be UGLY, people….
  11. Kentucky (14): Kentucky might be having a horrible end to the season, but they didn’t lose to The Citadel at home.
  12. Vanderbilt (12): Vanderbilt was shut out 25-0 at home against Texas A&M, but they didn’t lose to The Citadel at home.
  13. Missouri (13): Missouri was shut out at home against Tennessee, but they didn’t lose to The Citadel at home.
  14. South Carolina (11): They lost to The Citadel at home.
